BILL TRAYLOR: CHASING GHOSTS
OPENS APRIL 23 | 75 MIN.
Director Jeffrey Wolf’s unruffled and straightforward new documentary aims to reclaim the legacy of Bill Traylor, born into slavery on a Benton, Alabama cotton plantation in 1853 and dying 96 years later as an artist, forgotten by history. Self-taught at age 80, he created well over a thousand drawings and paintings between 1939-1942. His colorful, strikingly modernist work eventually led him to be recognized as one of America’s greatest self-taught artists and the subject of a Smithsonian retrospective. 100% Rotten Tomatoes | New York Times Critics Pick
“If every picture tells a story, the body of work displayed in the hauntingly intriguing documentary “Bill Traylor: Chasing Ghosts” speaks volumes on the life and times of the artist in question.” Michael Rechtschaffen, LA Times
